On a blustery night midway through Storm Darragh, the brave audience and choir made their way to St Lawrence Church where the roof tiles were flapping and doors banging.

But inside the atmosphere was warm and convivial, helped by the wafting aroma of mulled wine, the uplifting voices of the choir and appreciative applause from the audience.

In the first half excerpts of Messiah were put into context by Paul Kybird the Narrator and accompanied by the amazingly skillful Watling Quartet and John Bickerdike on trumpet, soprano and tenor soloists from the choir and David Johnston singing the bass solo.  The highlight was the Hallelujah Chorus when the audience were invited to stand and join in - many had even brought their own scores as fellow singers and much gusto was put into the resounding sound filling the church.

After refreshments and time for a catch-up, the second half included traditional audience carols, more modern pieces including Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer in swing style and a rousing We wish you a Merry Christmas to end the evening.

We are so grateful to all of you for coming - the church was packed - and also to everyone who helped to put on the concert, especially our inspirational MD Helen Swift.

'Coming to America' 29 June 2024
Towcester Choral Society’s Summer Concert celebrated the best in American choral music from traditional American folksong, through Fats Waller, Gershwin, Porter and Hammerstein, to Copland, Bernstein, Billy Joel, Eric Whitacre and Sarah Quartel accompanied by our own repetiteur Rowena Gibbons, as well as amazing professional instrumentalists Steve Morris, Jon French, Ruby Wallace and Chris Seddon.   St Lawrence Church was full and the night put a smile on everyone's face and a song in our hearts!    Thank you all for coming along, sharing a glass of Californian wine and allowing us to take you on a journey under the expert guidance of our wonderful MD Helen Swift.

Easter Concert 23rd March 2024

Saturday arrived as a blustery day with squalls and showers, as if the weather were already setting the atmosphere for the tumultuous concert to come!

Widely regarded as one of the greatest oratorios of the Romantic era, this dramatic and uplifting piece, sung in English and featuring stirring choruses, is based on the life of the prophet Elijah. Full of earthquakes, hurricanes, fiery chariots, wicked queens and holy visions this musical adventure was brought to life under the guidance of our musical director Helen Swift, with the support of local orchestra Trinity Camerata and professional soloists Edward Price, Hannah Fraser-Mackenzie, Sian Menna, Dominic Bevan and also introducing 13 year old Freddie Baker as the Youth.

We are very grateful to everyone who came along and also to all our helpers.

We welcomed 79 singers to the Towcester Town Hall on a cold winter's day  - what could be nicer than a joyful day of singing the great Elijah choruses.  27 visitors travelled from others choirs or just came along to share the joy of singing.  MD Helen Swift was brilliant with her beautiful voice leading by example and her fabulous patient knack of getting the very best out of us all.  The costumes and amazing display of pictures and text certainly helped to paint a picture of Elijah's story.  Rowena Gibbons accompanied with her usual skill and humour.

Refreshments included many cups of tea/coffee plus some very tasty snacks which were soon polished off.   It was also lovely to have some time to socialise with others.

Thank you to everyone who came along, and also to those who worked so hard to make it happen.
